September 2

On September 2, 1945, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, marking the end of World War II, was signed on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The ceremony lasted twenty-three minutes and was broadcast on radio worldwide. The Missouri was the last battleship built by the United States. Finally decommissioned in March 1992, it became a museum ship at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1998. Pictured: the deck of the Missouri at the surrender.
